Curling with Jack, written by Kathryn Sutherland, came from a day Kathryn spent at the Wheatland Rink in Regina, Sask. watching her dad, Jack, curl. It was with great sadness that she realized brooms were no longer used but rather flat foam bits.
As we played the song for the first time, in the studio, Simon found it befuddling. He felt the drums and guitar were fighting for a spot. Kathryn reworked the song, with a new upbeat swing, at rehearsal with Jason and Albert.
At the next recording session we took a deep breath and played the new arrangement. Simon loved the new sound/arrangement.
Albert’s bass and Jason’s drum were, again, live off the floor. The vocals, new electric guitar part, whose beat took a very long time to sink into Kathryn’s head, and the Fender Rhodes and piano were overdubbed later.
