Curling with Jack, written by Kathryn Sutherland, came from a day Kathryn spent at the historic Wheatland Rink in Regina, Sask. watching her dad, Jack, curl. It was with great sadness that she realized brooms were no longer used but rather flat foam bits. Things change, people get sick. This song has nothing to do with Kathryn’s dad or curling but was written watching he and his team mates curl.
As we played this track for Simon, the first time round, he said this song befuddles me and the drums and guitar are definitely fighting for a spot. Kathryn had just reworked the song to an upbeat swing tune with Albert and Jason at rehearsal. So she took a deep breath and went with her favoured drum beat. Albert’s bass part and Jason’s drum part were, again, live off the floor, the vocals, electric guitar part, whose beat took a very long time to sink into Kathryn’s head, and the Fender Rhodes and piano were overdubbed later.
